Blood, sweat and tears of joy as Gregory collects his trophies after winning the 2003 British Championships. |
Greg started his karate training in 1984 after many years of nagging Sensei Ronnie Christopher to take him. At the tender age of 6 he demonstrated a determination that that was a sign of things to come.
In 1988 he was awarded Shodan (Black Belt 1st Dan) and 2 years later he was awarded Neidan (Black Belt 2nd Dan) and because of age restrictions he had to wait a further 10 years until he was 21 before he could take his Sandan (Black Belt 3rd Dan) which he passed with flying colours in 2001.
After watching Sensei Ronnie Christopher compete at the highest level possible, Greg wanted to Follow suit. He attended selection for the junior England kumite squad, even though he had heard the stories of how gruelling and torturous these classes could be, he still attended and rose to the challenge.
That same year, he was selected to represent the England Juniors in the 1998 Europeans held in Prague then moved up to the seniors a year later, going straight into the senior team for the World Championships held in Tokyo in 2000 where he achieved a Bronze medal.
Since then he has been a member of the England and Great Britain team competing in European and world championships. It is with thanks to hard work from him and a lot of encouragement from Ronnie and Lloyd that he has been able to achieve his goals. The proudest moment for personnel reasons was winning the British senior kumite title in front of his family and friends.
Gregory has always been an exceptional student with all of the attributes that any top athlete needs to take them to the top. His modest and unassuming manor makes him a delight to be around, within the world of karate or out side of it.
Gregory is one of a rare breed of karate exponents who can and has won titles at Kata and Kumite at junior and senior level but for him, this is not enough! He has an over riding desire to win every karate title that there is to win.
