Review written by Richard Woo.

This is without question the most comprehensive DVD training guide to Shotokan karate I have seen. The range of topics covered is extremely broad and impressively packed into a running time of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Just about every aspect of modern day karate is demonstrated (with the aid of some innovative and carefully thought out camera angles) - including warming up, basics [stances, punches, kicks and blocks], kumite, and kata with applications. If I have a gripe about the package at all, it's that the full contents are not advertised or catalogued on the sleeve!

A running commentary overlays the footage, providing additional description and guidance on the techniques and drills, and also further narrative on the more cerebral aspects of the art such as its history and philosophy. In addition, the bite-sized segments are interspersed with quotations, varying in tone from deep and thought-provoking to the downright funny. Overall, the narrative comes across as conscientiously researched, well written and thoughtfully presented.

At the risk of stating the obvious, and despite my high opinion of the package, it must be regarded only as a tool. It is a highly valuable reference, but should be used to enhance and supplement what you learn in the dojo - it cannot (and does not attempt to) replace the experience of training in an instructor-led class with your peers. Having said that, it does indeed cover all the individual building blocks one requires to attain black belt, including the entire set of kata up to shodan level.

The DVD in itself represents remarkable value for money. I would even go as far as recommending that owners of the earlier VHS tape consider acquiring this digital edition - although the content is exactly the same, the sound and picture quality is more consistent, the format is more physically durable (not subject to wear), and the chapter splitting is extremely useful if you wish to quickly skip to the specific kata you are learning.

To sum up, I'll borrow a word from the original title of the video - "Inspirational". Just watch Sensei Ronnie Christopher's kumite segments and Sensei Sean Roberts' kata performances, and you'll see what I mean.
